Box Safely: The Importance of Safety in Boxing

Contrary to popular belief, boxing is quite an artistic sport. However, by nature, boxing is a very dangerous sport, with the majority of contact being made to the head in a repetitive and unrelenting fashion. The result? A high prevalence of sport-related injuries and potentially life-threatening consequences, most notably long-term brain damage, concussions, and CTE.

In order to make the sport as safe as possible, however, rules and regulations have been defined, ultimately protecting the fighter against injury and long-term damage. These rules and regulations, however, only lessen the danger, still leaving a ton of room for consequences. Even in amateur boxing whereby protective gear is necessary, the danger isn’t entirely mitigated…

How to Box Safely

Whether you’re a fighter who wants to train with true warrior intentions, or you simply want to box for fun in order to stay in shape, it’s imperative to first prioritize safety above anything else.

Involving the repetition of safe exercises and drills in a fun but controlled environment, you can enjoy all that boxing has to offer but without the bruises. Second, it’s all but necessary to wear protective gear whilst training, especially during drills that run the risk of getting hit, however light…

This includes mouth guards, wrist wraps, boxing gloves, head guards, proper footwear, and even chest guards during certain body-contact drills.

Next, it’s time to perfect the basics of movement (i.e. technique) and protection. Should you ever enter the ring, these boxing basics will be your best defence against getting hit. After all, if the protective gear isn’t there to protect you, YOU need to be there to protect yourself…

Basic boxing techniques include but are certainly not limited to footwork, proper stances, head movement, throwing mechanics, and breathing technique, among others.

Finally, in order to box safely, it’s imperative that you prioritize recovery; the last thing that you want to happen when training to become a warrior or to shed those last few pounds is a preventative injury that places you on the sidelines.

This is largely accomplished through warm-ups, cool downs, stretching regimens, hydration, and proper technique. 

Above all else, one of the best ways to become a better, more prepared boxer is to train both the physical and mental aspects of the sport. By being mentally sharp and physically fit, you give yourself the best odds of winning a match and avoiding severe damage.
