Is there such a thing as being able to box safely? While many perceive boxing to be a barbaric, contact-heavy sport, it doesn’t have to be. Of course, in the context of competitive sport and champion boxers, boxing involves hitting and getting hit.
However, what if you don’t want to get hit? What if you love the sport but don’t love the consequences? What if you’re in it for the fitness, not the ferociousness? All is not lost!
By getting instruction from world-class boxers in a controlled, group fitness class setting, all the while prioritizing safety over everything, you can successfully box without bruises. Not to mention the killer workout you’ll get! At Spartans Boxing Clubs, that’s what we do…
With that being said, what follows will be a discussion of how to box safely and efficiently so that you can enjoy all of the benefits of boxing WITHOUT the bruises. Let’s get right into it!
Box Safely: The Importance of Safety in Boxing
Contrary to popular belief, boxing is quite an artistic sport. However, by nature, boxing is a very dangerous sport, with the majority of contact being made to the head in a repetitive and unrelenting fashion. The result? A high prevalence of sport-related injuries and potentially life-threatening consequences, most notably long-term brain damage, concussions, and CTE.
In order to make the sport as safe as possible, however, rules and regulations have been defined, ultimately protecting the fighter against injury and long-term damage. These rules and regulations, however, only lessen the danger, still leaving a ton of room for consequences. Even in amateur boxing whereby protective gear is necessary, the danger isn’t entirely mitigated…
Luckily, for those looking to participate in the sport of boxing, however, free from consequence and safety concerns, they can join a gym like Spartans Boxing Club! It’s here where we teach members how to box in a safe and controlled environment.
How to Box Safely
Whether you’re a fighter who wants to train with true warrior intentions, or you simply want to box for fun in order to stay in shape, it’s imperative to first prioritize safety above anything else.
Learning how to box safely involves a multifaceted approach. Of course, the most obvious strategy for boxing without bruises is to avoid any contact sparring. This is exactly what we offer in our community-based, fitness-focused classes at Spartans Boxing Clubs…
If you’re looking for a fun and engaging way to shed a few pounds and meet a community of like-minded people in the process, you’ve come to the right club!
Involving the repetition of safe exercises and drills in a fun but controlled environment, you can enjoy all that boxing has to offer but without the bruises. Second, it’s all but necessary to wear protective gear whilst training, especially during drills that run the risk of getting hit, however light…
This includes mouth guards, wrist wraps, boxing gloves, head guards, proper footwear, and even chest guards during certain body-contact drills.
Next, it’s time to perfect the basics of movement (i.e. technique) and protection. Should you ever enter the ring, these boxing basics will be your best defence against getting hit. After all, if the protective gear isn’t there to protect you, YOU need to be there to protect yourself…
Basic boxing techniques include but are certainly not limited to footwork, proper stances, head movement, throwing mechanics, and breathing technique, among others.
Finally, in order to box safely, it’s imperative that you prioritize recovery; the last thing that you want to happen when training to become a warrior or to shed those last few pounds is a preventative injury that places you on the sidelines.
This is largely accomplished through warm-ups, cool downs, stretching regimens, hydration, and proper technique.
Above all else, one of the best ways to become a better, more prepared boxer is to train both the physical and mental aspects of the sport. By being mentally sharp and physically fit, you give yourself the best odds of winning a match and avoiding severe damage.
That’s what Spartans Boxing Clubs focus on; providing an incredible workout for our members, all the while teaching the technique and skill of boxing.
